Section 2: Cultural norms and behaviour

Cultural norms can be thought of as the “unwritten rules” of society. They dictate behaviours often without the need for words. When misinterpreted, they can lead to misunderstandings. This is why individuals need to develop cultural intelligence, in other words, raise their level of awareness of cultural differences and adapt their behaviour accordingly. Understanding that cultural norms are, in essence, an expression of shared values supports individuals’ smooth integration into the new socioeconomic environment.
